The Dilettante Cook is a podcast -- a recorded audio show that is transmitted through the Internet to listeners. You, the audience, can listen to recordings of The Dilettante Cook whenever you want, and in a variety of very convenient ways:
By going to this website and clicking the "play" button on the site's built-in audio player
By downloading the compressed audio file (called an "MP3 formatted file") to your computer, and listening to the show using your computer's audio playback software, such as iTunes or Windows Media Player, or on a portable MP3 player such as an Apple iPod or Microsoft Zune.
By installing a "podcatcher" application on your computer, such as iTunes or Juice, and subscribing to an "RSS feed", which automatically downloads the latest show to your computer whenever one is published
The third option, which uses a technology called "RSS" (Really Simple Syndication), is by far the most convenient way to receive podcasts. With a podcatcher application installed on your computer, you can subscribe to podcasts you enjoy, and they'll be sent to you as they are produced for you to enjoy whenever you wish. And the best part is this: virtually all podcatcher applications are free, as are just about all podcasts.
There are literally thousands of podcasts available, covering virtually every conceivable subject. To see what we mean, check out this sample of useful podcasts directories:
It's a common misconception that you need an Apple iPod to enjoy podcasts. In fact, most people don't listen to podcasts on iPods -- they simply play them online, or listen to them on their computers, or play them on other MP3 players. If you've got an iPod, you'll find iTunes the easiest way to subscribe and listen to podcasts. If not, you've got lots of other ways to enjoy podcasts, too.
